Hermit Crabs Are Unique Creatures
Hermit crabs are the members of the superfamily Paguroidea and are decapods crustaceans. About 1,100 species are known which are characterized by asymmetric abdomen concealed in a discarded gastropod shell carried around the hermit crab. Majority of the species have spirally curved abdomen which soft a feature quite different from the related crustaceans which have hard and calcified abdomens. The vulnerable abdomen is protected inside the molluscan shell in which it can be retracted. The tip of the hermit crab's abdomen is strongly adapted to cling to the columella of the shell of a snail. As the hermit crab increases in size it leaves the older shell and acquires a new and large shell in order to survive perfectly.
